This is a lovely old Selmer Truvoice Treble-and-Bass 50 valve head from the early 60’s. This is the earliest, and also the best condition one we have ever had. It’s in fantastic condition for its age, not like the usual rubbish you see on eBay and so on. It is in full working order (and sounds fantastic) after having a full service from my old mate at Rat Electronics in Newquay. This was his report and what he had to say about it:

Superb All original Amp and sounds just the way it should. There have been a couple of small resistor replacements but it looks like that was done years ago. I tested the Value of All the Resistors in the Amp and they seem to be + or – 10%, so within tolerance. Obviously the Mains Lead has been changed. I have done a PAT (personal appliance test) and all is AOK with a PASS. There is some slight Hum/Buzz but not at all bad for an Amp of this age. Valves are all ‘Tungsram’ or ‘Mazda’ and seem to be working OK. The Actual Power Output of the Amp is 44 Watts RMS but I suspect the main EL34 Power Valves are fairly worn. I don’t want to replace them as they seem to be Original. The Pots were all ‘Noisy’ but I used some service spray and they are now silent. Fitted with Original Transformers (Mains, Choke and Output) and they are NOT running HOT so seem AOK. I had to do a fair amount of cleaning as there seems to have been a family of Spiders living in the Back of the Amp and it was very dusty on top and inside the Chassis. I did a ‘Slight’ repair to the Amp covering as the Chassis had lifted some of the corners. The knobs are original but 4 of the Gold Inserts are missing. I guess that sometime in the Future the Power Valves will need replacing, the Amp is ‘Cathode Bias’ so will not need Re-Biasing when the Valves are changed. Also the Main (3x Large Can) filter Caps (supposed to have a life of only 10 years) seem OK at the Moment but may need replacing one day. I had a look online and found an Identical Amp in the USA for $1850……..(£1330). Conclusion: Superb All original Amp and sounds just the way it should. End of Report.

Spec as follows:

The Treble n Bass 50 would appear to be physically identical to the Bassmaster 50 apart from the model designation on the front panel, and very similar inside with the same valve lineup of ECC83 (initially 4 – but 3 in later models), EL34 (2) & GZ34 (1). Both appear to be multi-purpose amplifiers suitable for bass and/or guitar. The Bassmaster was the earlier of the two models (introduced during the Blue/Grey Period). The T’n’B was introduced in 1964 and both were produced in tandem for a short time until the Bassmaster was dropped from the range in favour of the Treble n Bass, which became one of the most popular Selmer models judging by the numbers still to be found today.
